In July 2023, the world witnessed the third eruption in a remarkable series of volcanic events on the Reykjanes peninsula, breaking an 800-year period of dormancy. The eruption in the remote area of Fagradalsfjall was merely the beginning, as subsequent eruptions occurred in the Sundhnúkur area near Grindavik and the Blue Lagoon, in the Svartsengi area. Experts suggest that these eruptions may mark the onset of a new historic period of volcanic activity, potentially spanning 300 to 400 years.
